KCBS In Depth: SF Giants Move Forward With Plans For New Waterfront Village

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – While the Golden State Warriors are on a full court press to build their new arena near the Bay Bridge, the San Francisco Giants are quietly pursuing their own waterfront development plan.

In fact, the World Series champs hope to build an entire village of shops, restaurants and, yes, a small arena, in the heart of the City’s Mission Bay.

“We think it will be really kind of a city within a city,” explained Larry Baer, Giants CEO and president. “Right there in the shadows of the ballpark, and really a new neighborhood.”

The Mission Rock parcel, across the water from the ballpark, is 27 acres.

“There will be some office opportunities, some residential opportunities, and we’re working on a small arena inside that parcel which is known as Lot A, which will be about 4,000 to 5,000 seat venue where we can have family shows and we can have concerts,” Baer told KCBS.

“The project will have some retail, so it will be fun as people are coming into the ballpark. They’ll have some additional retail opportunities, whether they’re restaurants, bars, shops. A public park that will be akin to Crissy Field, it will be a lot smaller, but it’ll be the southern part of San Francisco’s version of Crissy Field.”

The parking spaces lost when the lot is developed across McCovey Cove from AT&T Park would be replaced by a garage.

It will take several years to design, review and build, but Baer expressed confidence to KCBS that the team’s Mission Rock neighborhood will become a reality – and the civic heart of the emerging Mission Bay area.
