Parolee Arrested In Palo Alto Home Burglary

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) - Police reacted quickly to an emergency call to arrest a parolee who allegedly broke into a four-plex in Palo Alto early Saturday morning.

A resident of the 300 block of Emerson Street called police around 1:30 a.m. to report seeing a man in his backyard, according to police.

The man, later identified as 49-year-old parolee Jose Aldan Castro, fled the area on foot, police said. With assistance from a Los Altos police K-9 unit, officers tracked down Castro nearby and detained him.

Officers later discovered that Castro, who had initially lied about his identity, had been on active parole for felony marijuana sales in Los Angeles County, police said.

Police found a tear gas canister, two social security cards, a title to a car and a personal check made out to another person in a bag Castro was carrying. None of the items were in Castro's name.

Castro was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of residential burglary, prowling, being a felon in possession of tear gas and providing false information to an officer.

Police said they do not believe Castro is responsible for a break-in and attempted sexual assault that occurred in the same neighborhood early the morning of Nov. 29.

Anyone with more information about the case is asked to call Palo Alto police at (650) 329-2413.
