Walnut Creek Police Shoot, Kill Suspect During Altercation

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- An armed suspect who was shot and killed by police officers at a Walnut Creek apartment complex early Thursday morning has been identified as a 22-year-old man, authorities said.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office identified Anthony Banta Jr., a Walnut Creek resident, as the man shot and killed after officers responded to an incident at the Diablo Pointe Apartments at 1450 Creekside Drive.

At 3:13 a.m. a 911 call in which someone was screaming in the background was transferred to Walnut Creek police from county fire dispatch, police said.

Officers arrived at the complex and fired at Banta inside an apartment at 3:19 a.m., police said.

Police said officers were forced to shoot Banta, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released additional details about the confrontation.
