West Oakland Shop Hosts Bike Givaway In Honor Of Slain Baby

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A West Oakland bicycle shop was giving away dozens of bicycles Saturday afternoon to neighborhood children in honor of the birthday of a baby who died after he was shot in West Oakland more than a year ago, event organizers said.

The event kicked off at the Bikes 4 Life shop, located at 1600 Seventh St., with community leaders speaking about violence prevention and the need for more youth programming to keep the West Oakland area safer for children, organizers said.

About 40 bicycles were given away along with games and activities for young attendees, an organizer said.

The giveaway was in honor of 23-month-old Hiram Lawrence Jr. who was gravely injured in a Nov. 28, 2011 shooting in the 700 block of Willow Street.

He was taken off life support on Dec. 9, 2011.

Today would have been his third birthday.

Bikes 4 Life is a bike store, however organizers said it also serves as a leadership development organization with proceeds from sales going to local youth programs.
