SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) — Sacramento animal control officers say they are looking for anybody responsible for deliberately setting fire to a puppy that has since died.

The 4-month-old dog was found left for dead in North Sacramento on Wednesday.

Officials say the puppy apparently had been placed in a plastic container and was set afire either on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

Veterinarians eventually put the dog to sleep to end its suffering.

Now, Red Rover, a Sacramento animal protection nonprofit, is offering a $2,500 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the abuse.

Program director Karen Brown said Sacramento chief city animal control Officer Dan Torres contacted her group on Wednesday asking for help with solving the crime.
