Scathing Report Rips San Jose's Foster Child Center For Inadequate Facilities

SAN JOSE (CBS/AP) -- A California county's new foster child receiving center in a downtown San Jose basement is being called woefully inadequate.

A scathing report released on Thursday says the Santa Clara County center, which opened weeks ago, is cramped and dangerous. It calls for urgent relocation of the facility.

Superior Court juvenile justice commission members visited the center last month and found it unwelcoming.

Outside the building, the inspectors found abandoned medical equipment and a trash bin filled with large shards of glass.

The county recently moved the center from an eight-acre campus boasting 132 beds, a full cafeteria, ball field, art studios and computer lab to the downtown basement.

The county is now emphasizing the importance of families and small, home-like settings.
