Central California Mayor Facing Charges After Fight Over Milkshake Price

ATWATER (CBS/AP) -- Authorities say a California official who was yelling about the price of a milkshake at a Foster's Freeze shop is facing a misdemeanor charge after he challenged a bystander who tried to intercede to a fight.

Atwater Mayor Pro Tem Craig Mooneyham is accused of disturbing the peace in connection with the Jan. 26 incident. He was charged on Monday.

Police say Mooneyham confronted the clerk who sold him the $7 milkshake because he thought the price was too high. The clerk had apparently charged him $1.50 for extra toppings.

According to police, witnesses said when the bystander tried to intervene, Mooneyham challenged him to a fight.

Mooneyham disputes the allegations, telling the Sun-Star the bystander was confrontational. He described the incident as a mutual argument.
