Phil Matier: Anchor Brewing Company Plans Expansion At Giants' Mission Rock Project

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Anchor Brewing Company plans to expand, and is eyeing a large space in the new Mission Rock development south of San Francisco's AT&T park.

According to a report published Tuesday, the beer maker wants to put production and distribution facilities, a restaurant, a museum and other public attractions at what is presently Pier 48.

The company would be the San Francisco Giants' first tenant for their $1.6 billion project at Mission Rock.

Anchor executives are quoted as saying the expansion would quadruple their output from 120,000 to 600,000 barrels a year. Currently, Anchor makes its beer at a production facility on San Francisco's Potrero Hill.

Mission Rock, a spread of 27 acres, is also being developed for as many as 1,500 apartments, other retail and office space and parks.

San Francisco's Port Commission is expected to formally consider Anchor's plans next month and, if approved, construction could begin late next year.

A press conference was planned for Tuesday morning with Mayor Ed Lee and Giants executives to discuss the Mission Rock development at Pier 48.
