Man In Apartment Standoff With Oakland Police Surrenders
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A suspect who was yelling that he was armed with a firearm has surrendered to officers in West Oakland after a brief standoff Friday afternoon, police said.
Oakland police Sgt. Chris Bolton said police received a 911 call at 1:41 p.m. from a resident at an apartment in the 900 block of West MacArthur Boulevard reporting that a suspect was found inside his home.
Bolton said officers who responded to the scene learned that a suspect was inside the apartment breaking windows, yelling that he was armed with a firearm and making threats toward nearby residents.
He said patrol officers evacuated nearby residences and restricted vehicle and pedestrian access to the immediate scene and surrounding areas.
Additional officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office were also called in to try to safely make contact with the suspect and detain him, Bolton said.
After officers established contact with the suspect, they safely detained him at about 2:30 p.m. after he willingly surrendered outside the apartment building, according to Bolton.
He said police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident and there was no threat to nearby community members.
However, Bolton said there were still traffic delays and restrictions Friday afternoon on portions of San Pablo Avenue, West Street and West MacArthur Boulevard.
