CARMEL (CBS SF) — A married couple from San Jose died while they were scuba diving just south of Carmel on Friday, a state park superintendent said.

The couple, Volodymyr and Marina Butsky, was scuba diving near Whaler’s Cove in the Point Lobos State Reserve but when they went missing. A person that knew the couple who was ashore reported them missing at about 2:30 p.m., state parks Monterey District Superintendent Matt Fuzie said.

State park lifeguards, Carmel Highlands firefighters, and Cal Fire all responded to the scene.

Volodymyr, 40, and Marina, 41 were found and transported to a local hospital, Fuzie said.

They were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Fuzie said Whaler’s Cove is a shallow diving area and usually a safe area to dive. He also said the conditions that day were also safe.
