New Series 'Golden Boy' Premieres On KPIX 5

(CBS NEWS) - TV's newest "Golden Boy" makes his debut. British actor Theo James stars in the new CBS police procedural as a rookie detective who eventually becomes history's youngest New York City police commissioner. The series is told through flashbacks as Commissioner Walter William Clark, Jr. (James) reminisces about his meteoric rise.

Chi McBride, who appeared on the Fox series "Boston Public" from 2000-2004, plays Clark's seasoned partner, veteran Detective Don Owen.

James, who starred in 2012's "Underworld Awakening," previously captivated TV audiences when he played a Turkish dignitary who died under scandalous circumstances in a first-season episode of "Downton Abbey."

"Golden Boy" comes from the mind of Nicholas Wootton, who served as the executive producer of shows such as "Chuck," Law & Order" and "NYPD Blue."

"[Clark] makes a lot of mistakes" Wootton told U.S. News & World Report. "He's willing to do things that are illegal, essentially. He does things that are just simply wrong."

The first episode of "Golden Boy" premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. The second episode will air at the same time the following week before the series makes a permanent move to Fridays starting March 8.

"Entertainment Tonight" recently had the chance to go behind the scenes and visit the set of "Golden Boy" on location in New York:
