SAN FRANCISCo (KCBS) – The 49ers will reportedly get a high second round draft choice this year and a conditional third round choice next year in a trade for backup quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs.
“It’s a lot,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. “(The 49ers) have a very good team, and then they have a lot of draft choices, which gives them some chips that they can cash in to either get players in areas that they need or to help their special teams.”
The 49ers will have five draft choices in the first three rounds this year if the deal is finalized.
“They’re going to be able to take a real good team and help that team.”
Madden said he hopes the trade also benefits Alex Smith, who was replaced as the 49ers starting quarterback while recovering from an injury last season.
“I’m so impressed with how classy he’s been handling this whole thing. He doesn’t have any jerk in him… You hope that it all works out for him because he’s a class, class guy,” the former coach said.
Stephen Curry scored 54 points including 11 three-pointers in a Warriors loss to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night.
“You know how players always say ‘if you’re going to break a record, if you’re going to have a big night, if you’re going to do those things, you’d rather do it at home than on the road?'” Madden asked. “Madison Square Garden may be the mecca for basketball. And maybe that would be one of the places — if you’re going to do something like Curry did last night — maybe you would rather do it at Madison Square Garden than at home. And that is big.” (8:15)
