Niners Expected To Release Akers Before Free Agency

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS Sports) -- The San Francisco 49ers are expected to release kicker David Akers before free agency begins March 12, per a source.

Akers struggled mightily in 2012, his 13th season in league, making 29 of 42 field-goal attempts and leading coach Jim Harbaugh to mull a change before Super Bowl XLVII.

CBS Sports analysts predicted this move in early February, especially with expectations high in San Francisco and Akers due to make $3 million in 2013.
