SAUSALITO (CBS/AP) — A newly licensed teen driver was arrested near Sausalito early Saturday morning for allegedly driving under the influence after a crash that left her and others in the car seriously injured, according to a California Highway Patrol sergeant.

San Francisco resident Elsa Ramirez, 18, was driving five other people in her Acura sedan around 2:20 a.m. She was heading south on U.S. Highway 101 near the Waldo Tunnel in Marin County when the car apparently crashed multiple times into the roadway’s center divider, CHP Sgt. Marcus Bartholomew said.

The car then went up an embankment and struck a guardrail before coming to rest in the middle of the roadway.

Two male passengers got out of the car and fled the scene and were not located. An 18-year-old woman inside the car also fled and was located by CHP officers near the Golden Gate Bridge.

Bartholomew said another 18-year-old woman, who appears not to have been wearing a seatbelt, was found inside the car and taken to Marin General Hospital with major injuries including broken bones and facial lacerations.

Another female passenger was transported to a Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Rafael with moderate injuries.

Ramirez, who suffered a broken arm and other injuries in the crash, was taken to Marin General Hospital. While at the hospital, she was placed under arrest on suspicion of felony DUI and causing injury to another.

The teen received her California Driver’s License just eight days ago, Bartholomew said.

Any witnesses to the crash or those with information about the people who fled the vehicle are asked to call the Marin CHP office at (415) 924-1100.
