Fatal Crash Shuts All Lanes Of I-780 In Benicia, Snarls Morning Commute

BENICIA (CBS SF) -- All lanes of eastbound Interstate Highway 780 in Benicia were closed after a fatal collision Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The two-car collision was first reported at 5:37 a.m. at the Military West off-ramp, the CHP said. One person was found laying in the fast lane.

That person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Sig-alert was issued around 6:05 a.m. Eastbound Highway 780 is closed at Columbus Parkway.

There was no estimate when the lanes would reopen, but CHP believed the investigation would take some time.

As of 6:25 a.m., cars were using the right hand side of the road to pass, but CHP was advising drivers to use alternate routes.
