SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)—The invites have gone out for a Facebook event next week in which the company plans to unveil what it has called the new home on Android.

Everything in the rumor-mill online indicates that it’s going to be an Android cell phone centered on Facebook. People are going as far to call it the Facebook phone. But as you know, Facebook already has a number of apps for mobile phones – both a Facebook app itself as well as a messaging app and it also owns Instagram.

This could be a phone that is really Facebook-centric. You could turn it on and right away it could take you to the Facebook home screen and that could also be the default messaging application.

I think this messenger and Facebook email that many users are conflicted over brings up a broader question, which is – do people want or need a Facebook phone? I use the app on my Android or iPhone, but do I really need a phone centered around the social network itself? I’m not convinced yet.
