SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Rutgers University has fired basketball coach Mike Rice after video surfaced showing him physically and verbally abusing his players.

“Where he ever thought that was coaching, I have no idea,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. “Where he learned that, how he got away with it, how he got started doing that – I mean, if we ever get to a point where we believe that you have to push and hit and shove and throw balls at kids to coach them or to teach them, then we’re in the wrong profession.”

Texas pitcher Yu Darvish lost a perfect game Tuesday night when the Astros’ Marwin Gonzalez hit a single between Darvish’s legs with two out in the ninth.

“Sometimes you just feel that you have to enjoy that,” Madden said. “We’re so where we have to be number one, we have to win it all, we have to be perfect. Sometimes when you’re just like a little off perfect, you know, that’s pretty good too.”

The Rangers won 7-0. (9:05)
