SUV Driver Hits, Kills 2-Year-Old On Scooter In Modesto

MODESTO (CBS/AP) -- Police in Modesto say a 2-year-old girl was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver as she was riding a scooter in the street.

Sgt. Ivan Valencia said Saturday that officers arrested the driver of a Ford Expedition after he fled the scene of Friday night's crash to a nearby house.

The toddler was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name was not immediately released.

The driver, 40-year-old Remedios Rodriguez Chaidez, was arrested for investigation of felony hit and run and DUI.

Investigators were looking into why the girl was out in the street.

Police said family members rushed to her side right after she was hit.
