Police Investigate Suspicious Package In San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- The San Jose police bomb squad declared a suspicious device that resembled a pipe bomb was safe Friday evening after it was found at a business in the 500 block of Charles Street on Friday afternoon.

The suspicious device was reported just before 2 p.m. and the bomb squad was called in as a precaution, according to Sgt. Jason Dwyer.

The area was not evacuated, but people were told to shelter in place. No threats were received, Dwyer said.

The device is not believed to have contained explosives and the bomb squad declared it safe around 7 p.m. It was likely discarded in someone's trash, Dwyer said.

Traffic was diverted from the area of Charles and 13th streets during the investigation.
