Man In Custody After San Jose Triple Stabbing Kills Woman & Boy, Wounds Girl

SAN JOSE (KCBS/KPIX 5) -- Authorities said a man possibly linked to the stabbings of a woman and two young children in San Jose Wednesday afternoon was detained in San Francisco several hours later.

According to Santa Clara County Undersheriff John Hirokawa, 29-year-old Ruben Ramirez was detained by U.S. Marshals and San Francisco Police around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday in an undisclosed part of the city. Hirokawa said there were no signs he resisted being taken into custody.

Earlier, Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies and the California Highway Patrol conducted a yard-to-yard search in the Alum Rock area of East San Jose on Wednesday evening as they looked for a man suspected of stabbing the 48-year-old woman and her grandchildren.

Deputies said the woman and a one-year-old boy died, while a 3-year-old girl was hospitalized in very serious condition after being stabbed inside a home around 3:30 p.m. Police said the victims were found by a relative.

Deputies identified Ramirez - a family member who lived in the home where the attack occurred - as a person-of-interest who was sought for questioning. They described Ramirez as 5'6" tall, approximately 210 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Deputy Kurtis Stenderup said that Ramirez has a history of mental illness and that the sheriff's office had responded to calls about him at the home before.

The search area for Ramirez was concentrated on Viewmont Drive off of Alum Rock Avenue, where about 75 officers with guns drawn in their hands were on scene along with search dogs.

Anyone who sees Ramirez was asked by deputies to call 911 immediately; deputies noted that Ramirez has also been known to frequent homeless shelters.

No details about what may have led up to the attacks were provided by authorities.
