Grenade Found In San Jose Garage Detonated Safely

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A grenade found in a San Jose garage Friday afternoon was safely detonated and removed, according to police.

A resident on the 5300 block of Clovercrest Drive called police around 2 p.m. Friday to report that she had found a grenade in her garage, according to Sgt. Jason Dwyer.

Officers located the grenade, which still had the pin inserted, and called in the bomb squad.

The area around the residence was evacuated while bomb squad technicians removed the grenade and used explosives to detonate it outside, Dwyer said.

There were no injuries, and it is not known whether the grenade was live.

The source of the grenade is under investigation, but police do not believe it was planted deliberately in an effort to cause harm. No suspects have been arrested.

Residents were expected to be allowed back into their homes shortly, Dwyer said around 6:20 p.m.
