Quakes Hit Near Eureka
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- Two earthquakes rattled the far Northern California coast Saturday morning, but authorities say there are no reports of damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the first quake hit at 6:46 a.m. Saturday 34 miles southwest of Eureka.Then a second quake -- with a magnitude of 3.9 -- hit at 8:54 a.m. 29 miles southwest of Eureka.
The USGS says it has received reports of shaking felt in Eureka and nearby Ferndale, but a Eureka police dispatcher says she did not feel either quake, and the department had not received any calls about the earthquakes.
USGS seismologist John Bellini says the quakes are probably part of what he termed a "cluster of activity" in the area, and he notes earthquakes of similar sizes hit the area on a regular basis.
