Bay To Breakers Reveler Killed In Fall From Roof At SF House Party

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man who fell from the roof of a home along the route of Sunday's Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco has died of his injuries, according to authorities.

The unidentified man plunged from the home on the 2000 block of Fell St. during a house party, police said.

The man reportedly fell while leaning over the roof around 3:15 p.m. He was rushed to San Francisco General where he later died.

A police spokesman told KCBS on Sunday that it was a 28 year old male who fell from the roof.

San Francisco police arrested 21 people for public intoxication, one for possession of a firearm and one felony arrest for robbery during the race and event, according to police Officer Albie Esparza.

Another 16 people were taken into sobering centers. Police also responded to 20 house parties, notifying party-goers that it was time to "end the festivities," Esparza said.

One officer sustained minor injuries during an arrest, and two bars were admonished about being over their occupancy limits, Esparza said.

SF Police Report Fewer Problems from Sunday's Bay to Breakers

There were many more officers on the streets than past years, and runners noticed.

"I think it's necessary, I mean just like subconsciously to put you at ease, you know, while you're racing. People are here to have fun," reasoned one man.

"It looks like they've done a good job with it," another complimented SFPD's security efforts.

"It appears that people did listen to the message and as you can see, you know a few people here had a little bit too much to drink but other than that it was a great day," confirmed Esparza.

"They appear to have listened to the authorities, the message that we were conveying all along is to limit the number of bags you can bring."

SFPD planned to conduct a post-event review of security in the coming days.

"Our department will look at what worked, what didn't, you know where can we place people for future events," Esparza said.
