OAKLAND (KCBS) – Charles Woodson visits the Oakland Raiders Tuesday as the free agent defensive back looks for a new home.

“I think the Raiders have a pretty good chance there,” John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. At age 36, Madden said he wouldn’t expect Woodson to be a starting safety or corner, but that he could continue to excel as a nickle specialist covering a slot receiver.

“He’s really good there because he’s strong, he has good hands, (and) he can hold up a slot. And then the other thing is he’s a good blitzer… A lot of them when they blitz — those safeties and corners — if you block them, they just stop. It was (just) the element of surprise… (Woodson) developed pass rush moves. If a blocker were to come on him, he could make a move on that blocker and still get to the quarterback… He’s one of the best at that ever.”

Woodson was with the Raiders for his first eight seasons in the NFL. An eight time Pro Bowl selection, he was released by the Green Bay Packers after last season.

The Washington Redskins are cautiously optimistic about quarterback Robert Griffin III’s recovery from his knee injury.

“You don’t want him to feel that you’re pushing him,” Madden said. “The biggest thing is going to be adjusting their offense to the new RG III after surgery… Some of the things that they did with him, some of the things they asked him to do, and some of the things that he did naturally, he’s going to have to calm down.” (7:30)
