Antioch Hospital Patient Who Jumped Into Canal Identified

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A man whose body was discovered in the Contra Costa Canal nearly two days after he left a local emergency room and jumped into the waterway has been identified.

A Contra Costa County coroner's deputy said 48-year-old Brentwood man Saul Hernandez was found in the canal on Wednesday during an ongoing search of the area.

He had last been seen jumping into the water around 7:30 p.m. Monday after leaving Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials.

Contra Costa County Water District officials said Hernandez was found around the area where he entered the canal, near the intersection of Lone Tree Way and James Donlon Boulevard.

Fire and rescue crews initially searched the waterway for about two hours on Monday night before turning the search over to the Contra Costa Water District.

Information about why Hernandez was admitted to the hospital or why he left was not available.
