Boy, 13, Drowns In Antioch Canal

ANTIOCH (CBS/AP) -- A 13-year-old boy has drowned after ending up in a Contra Costa County canal filled with swift-moving water.

Contra Costa Fire Protection District Capt. Robert Marshall said a friend tried to jump into the Antioch water district canal Saturday to rescue the boy, but got out of the water when he realized the current was too strong.

It was unclear why the teen went into the canal, but police did find a skateboard near the water's edge. Marshall said the boy climbed over a six-foot-high fence that runs the length of the 46-mile-long canal.

The Contra Costa Times says it was the second time this week that someone has died in the canal.

On Wednesday, the body of 48-year-old Saul Hernandez of Brentwood was found in the water.
