Pot Grow Found During Fire In Oakland Warehouse

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Firefighters discovered a marijuana grow site inside a warehouse in East Oakland Thursday morning after responding to a fire, fire officials said.

The fire at 1232 51st Ave., located near East 12th Street, was reported at 4:17 a.m., according to fire officials.

"We knew we had something on fire, we just didn't know there would be illegal marijuana grow inside the building," Battalion Fire Chief Lisa Baker said

Inside the warehouse were 60 to 75 four-foot high marijuana plants as well as a very extensive, dangerous and illegal wiring system. With dangling live wires, firefighters had to wait for the power to be shut off in order to get inside.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 4:38 a.m., fire officials said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
