Vallejo Officer Fatally Shoots Man Suspected Of Killing His Own Wife

VALLEJO (CBS/AP) -- A Vallejo police officer has fatally shot a man suspected of gunning down his wife after he pointed a handgun at the officer.

Lt. Lee Horton said the officer confronted the man Saturday afternoon after numerous witnesses called 911 to report that a man had shot a woman in an alley.

Horton said the officer saw the 57-year-old man stand near the woman, who was lying on the ground, and as he got closer the man pointed a gun at him. He said the officer fire at him in self-defense.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. The officer was not injured.

The man and his wife's name were not immediately released.

The circumstances surrounding her death were under investigation. Police said the suspect owned a business nearby.
