Officers Kill Armed Robber At Castro Valley Restaurant

CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) -- A robbery in progress at a burger restaurant in Castro Valley was interrupted when Alameda County sheriff's deputies shot and killed the suspect late Friday night, a sheriff's sergeant said.

Deputies were conducting a traffic stop just after 10 p.m. on Castro Valley Boulevard when they were notified of a robbery in progress at the Boulevard Burger, located at 3714 Castro Valley Blvd., Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

Nelson said the deputies went into the restaurant and saw a suspect, wearing gloves and a mask, holding a .357 revolver.

The suspect turned to face the deputies and an employee at the restaurant grabbed the suspect's arm causing the revolver to fire one round, according to Nelson.

A deputy opened fire at the suspect, striking and killing him, Nelson said.

The suspect has not yet been identified.

"If the traffic stop would have been 25 feet farther, this would have been a different story," Nelson said.

Boulevard Burger closed at 9 p.m., according to the restaurant's website. Nelson said investigators are working on determining how the suspect got into the restaurant.

Several employees were in the back of the restaurant at the time of the shooting, according to Nelson.

No one else was shot in the gunfire. The employee who grabbed the suspect's arm suffered a minor powder burn from the errant shot by the suspect, Nelson said.

Investigators are expected to remain at the scene for several hours, according to Nelson.

Castro Valley Boulevard, between Redwood Road and Forest Avenue, will be closed during the investigation. Drivers are recommended to use Norbridge Avenue as an alternate route.
