Sex Offender Arrested After Attack On Napa State Hospital Nurse

NAPA (KPIX 5) -- A registered nurse at Napa State Hospital was assaulted by a male patient at the facility Sunday night. KPIX 5 has learned a convicted sex offender was arrested in the case.

A state hospital spokesperson said the incident occurred inside a hospital building Sunday night. While the nurse was attacked, she immediately called for help using an electronic alarm attached to her name tag. Staff members came to her rescue and the suspect was arrested.

Hospital officials said they could not elaborate on additional details about the assault and that they are not allowed to give the suspect's name. However, KPIX 5 has found out 38-year-old Kevin Long was the only person arrested by Napa State Hospital Police on Sunday.

Long is being held at the Napa County Jail. He is facing several charges including false imprisonment, rape, and attempted rape.

According to state prison records, Long was arrested in Modesto last September for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl on a bus. The incident occurred one day after he was released from prison for another sexual crime.

Workers at the hospital carry the alarms after hospital staff member Donna Gross was killed by patient Jess Willard Massey in 2010. Massey was sentenced in 2011 to 25 years to life in prison for murder.

According to hospital officials, the nurse was treated by staff members before seeking additional treatment at another hospital.
