Giants, Padres Benches Clear Following Bumgarner Brushback Pitch

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- Both benches cleared after San Francisco Giants starter Madison Bumgarner threw a pitch behind San Diego Padres' first baseman Jesus Guzman in the second inning of their game Wednesday.

Bumgarner's first pitch to Guzman sailed about belt-high, apparently in response to Guzman's excessive celebration after hitting a pinch-hit home run Tuesday night.

Guzman jumped out of the way and then took several steps toward Bumgarner with his bat pointed at the pitcher. Giants catcher Buster Posey and plate umpire Tony Randazzo immediately stepped in front of Guzman.

Bumgarner walked toward home plate as players and coaches from both sides gathered around the area between home plate and the mound. Guzman was restrained along the first base line as order was restored and both teams warned. No one was ejected and no punches were thrown.

Guzman flied out to the warning track in left field. In the seventh inning, Guzman connected for a home run against Bumgarner to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

The Giants ultimately won the game 4-2.
