Man Killed In East Oakland Shooting; Gunman Sought

OAKLAND (KCBS) -- Police were searching for a gunman who shot dead a man on an East Oakland street early Thursday morning.

At 5:32 a.m. Oakland police received a report of gunshots in the 9800 block of A Street, near International Boulevard.

Spokeswoman Johnna Watson said the victim, a 24-year-old man who was riding a purple child's bicycle, was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

According to Watson ShotSpotter technology as well as multiple citizens' calls alerted police to the scene of the incident.

"Unfortunately we have lost another life in the city of Oakland," Watson said of the city's 44th homicide this year.

Wendell Porter, a man at the scene with tears streaming down his face, said the victim was his son Kyle.

"You would never think it would hit you directly, but it's hit me and I'm hurting right now. That was my only child, my only son and I was working with him to be more of a father to his son. Now that's been taken away from me for whatever reason, I don't know."

Watson said that while city's homicide rate is down 17 percent compared to this time last year and that shootings are down as well, "One homicide is one homicide too many."

Police did not have a motive and the search for the suspect continues.
