Man Being Detained By Oakland Police Collapses, Dies

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A man being detained by Oakland Police early Monday morning collapsed following a struggled and later died at a hospital, according to authorities.

The police activity began around 1:40 a.m. when officers were called to a disturbance at a home on the 2300 block of East 21st Street, according to Officer J. Moore.

When officers arrived, they detained a 53-year-old male subject for psychiatric evaluation, according to Oakland Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson.

The man resisted and struggled with officers as they tried to place him into a police car, said Watson.

During the struggle, officers and the man went to the ground and he became unresponsive, said Watson. Officers began to perform CPR on him as they waited for an ambulance to arrive, she said.

The unidentified man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Watson said the death was being investigated by the department's Major Crimes Section Homicide Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Alameda County Coroner's Office as part of standard procedure when a person dies in police custody.

Streets near the home were blocked off while officers responded to the incident, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department's Major Crimes Section Homicide Unit at (510) 238-3821 or the TIP LINE at 777-2805.
