MARIN CITY (CBS SF) — A Marin County sheriff’s deputy shot a man twice in the arm after the man drove toward him in Marin City on Sunday afternoon, a sheriff’s lieutenant said Monday morning.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, spotted 44-year-old Marin City resident Chaka Grayson in a parked vehicle on the side of Terners Drive around 5:50 p.m., Lt. Jamie Scardina said.

The deputy recognized Grayson and was aware that his driver’s license was suspended, and pulled his patrol car behind Grayson’s vehicle, Scardina said.

When Grayson ducked down as the deputy approached his car, the deputy drew his weapon and ordered Grayson to show his hands, Scardina said.

The deputy walked around to the front of Grayson’s car, and was five to 10 feet from the vehicle when Grayson accelerated toward him, Scardina said. He then fired several rounds from his service weapon.

Grayson kept driving, and his car was later located abandoned in a nearby parking lot. Blood was found, indicating that Grayson was bleeding and needed medical attention, but Grayson was gone, Scardina said.

Authorities shut down city streets and the Marin City exit from U.S. Highway 101, and Grayson was eventually found at a residence and taken to a hospital, Scardina said.

“Some community members called us around 9:15 p.m. and said he needed medical attention and was willing to surrender,” he said.

There were about 40 people at the shooting scene on Terners Drive, and some of them threw rocks at the deputy, who suffered cuts and bruises to his head, Scardina said. The deputy, a five-year veteran, was treated at a hospital and released.

“It’s unfortunate at a time like this that some citizens felt they had to throw rocks at the deputy. It would have been nice if they came forward,” Scardina said.

Novato police are investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
