SAN DIEGO (CBS SF) – The world’s largest comic book and entertainment convention will receive a healthy dose of hard rock in the form of advance film clips and a live performance at a secret location. Metallica has announced plans to take over the San Diego Convention Center’s 6,130-seat Hall H on Friday, July 19 to premiere the trailer and exclusive footage of Metallica Through The Never at Comic Con 2013.

James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, along with writer/director Nimród Antal (Kontroll) and producer Charlotte Huggins will take the stage from 6:30-7 p.m. to premiere the trailer and footage followed by a discussion on the making of the 3D film.

“You’ve heard us use the word ‘first’ a few times this year and we’re back with a truly unusual, unbelievably exciting first for us – Comic-Con, San Diego here we come!” the band noted in a post to its official website over the weekend. “The now iconic convention hosts well over 100,000 visitors from all over the world to talk film, TV, art, collectables, and of course, comics. We are totally psyched to be a part of it.”

Starring The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Dane DeHaan, Metallica Through the Never is said to offer never-before-seen live performances of the band’s iconic songs created exclusively for the film, set for a major North American theatrical release on September 27, in more than 300 IMAX 3D Theaters, expanding to additional theaters on October 4.

Following the premiere, the band will move to a secret venue to play for a relatively small number of fans. The band will give away 500 tickets to convention-goers (though a distribution method is yet to be revealed) in addition to a number of tickets going to Met Club members.
