Surfers Named For 2013-14 Mavericks; Event Window Announced
HALF MOON BAY (CBS SF) — The Mavericks Invitational has released of its list of elite big-wave surfers to compete in their 2013-14 event.
Among the 24 competitors (see full list below) is defending champion Peter Mel of Santa Cruz.
Contest organizers also announced that this season’s contest window will open on Nov. 1 and run through March 31.
On just 24 hours notice during that window, the selected group of surfers will make the trek to Half Moon Bay to test their skills and vie for the title of Mavericks champion.
“We’re all stoked to be back for another year,” said Mavericks pioneer Jeff Clark, who served on the selection committee. “The 2013-14 season looks promising, with a lot of positive changes made for the competitors and fans. The perfect contest day we’re looking for is typically a northwest groundswell between 18 and 20 feet (translating into waves faces of 30- to 40-feet).”
The one-day competition takes place at the legendary Mavericks surf break located a half-mile offshore at Pillar Point Harbor.
