Truckee Police, Volunteers Rescue Injured Bear Cub

RENO, Nev. (CBS/AP) -- An injured bear cub is on the mend north of Lake Tahoe thanks to some help from local volunteers and police in Truckee.

Police say the six-month-old cub apparently had been hit by a car more than a week ago and suffered a broken leg.

Several Truckee residents had reported the cub in their neighborhood this week, and on Thursday they spotted it up a tree.

With help from Truckee police, Dave Baker of the Truckee Bear League climbed the tree and was able to lower the cub to the ground where it was placed in a crate.

The cub is recovering at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, where it underwent surgery Friday morning to repair two broken bones.
