ROHNERT PARK (CBS SF) – A man died in Rohnert Park on Sunday night when he was thrown from a moving SUV that had just been stolen by his brother, a police sergeant said.
Emmanuel Sanchez-Martinez, 26, stole a Chevrolet Tahoe from one of his brothers in front of a home in the 400 block of Anson Avenue around 10:25 p.m. Sunday, Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Sgt. Aaron Johnson said.
As Sanchez-Martinez was backing up, his brother Jose Sanchez-Martinez, 28, jumped onto the driver’s side of the moving vehicle, and his other brother Edgar Sanchez-Martinez, 27, jumped onto the passenger side, Johnson said.
Emmanuel sped down Anson Avenue with both of his brothers hanging on to the outside of the Tahoe, Johnson said. The brothers’ cousins followed the Tahoe in a separate car to try to get Emmanuel to stop driving, Johnson said.
The SUV was moving too quickly for the two brothers to safely jump from the vehicle, Johnson said.
As Emmanuel drove west on Southwest Boulevard, he lost control of the Tahoe, which struck a curb and a cement wall that protects valves used by the fire department to hook up hoses, Johnson said.
Edgar Sanchez-Martinez was thrown from the SUV and was pronounced dead at the scene, Johnson said.
Jose Sanchez-Martinez was also thrown from the vehicle and landed 50 feet away in a parking lot, Johnson said. He was treated for his injuries at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and later released.
Witnesses said Emmanuel Sanchez-Martinez got out of the SUV and ran south through the parking lot of a strip mall at 121 Southwest Blvd. He is still at large, Johnson said.
Johnson said all of the brothers live at the house on Anson Avenue, and that alcohol was involved “on the part of all three brothers.” He said they have had previous contacts with police.
Police from Rohnert Park, Petaluma and Santa Rosa responded to the incident, Johnson said.
