Teen Killed In Sonoma County ATV Crash

GUALALA (CBS SF) - A 14-year-old boy was killed Wednesday when his all terrain vehicle crashed during a family camping trip in Sonoma County, authorities said.

The body of 14-year-old Ryan Kinney was found several miles from the family's camp site on a private logging property off Annapolis Road near the town of Gualala, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jon Sloat.

Sloat said the boy took off on a 2000 Yamaha 4-weel drive ATV around 2 p.m. The family alerted authorities when he had not returned more than three hours later.

Kinney was wearing a helmet when the ATV crashed and rolled on top of him.

"It seems this teenager was doing everything okay," Sloat said.

"They are quite heavy, sometimes as heavy as a motorcycle. So if it falls n you, it can be fatal."

Sloat said the terrain was not very rough, noting that type of vehicle is capable of speeds up to 50 mph.

No criminal charges have been filed because the incident took place on private property where vehicle codes are not usually enforced.
