Oakland Police Nab Suspected Gang Members Linked To Armed Robberies

OAKLAND (KCBS) - Oakland police have arrested several members of a violent gang investigators believe is responsible for armed robberies and burglaries throughout the Bay Area.

At least five suspected members of a gang known as the Money Team were taken into custody early Thursday morning, said Police Chief Sean Whent.

"They do prey upon a lot of people with armed robberies, so to target those people should net some good results for us," he said, adding that robberies, burglaries and home invasions linked to Money Team members took place in Oakland nearly every day.

Whent said conflict with other gangs sometimes escalated to shootings and murder. "A lot of the violence comes in when they have friction with other groups."

The ten search warrants that led to the arrests were served as part of Operation Ceasefire, a year-program where suspected perpetrators of violent crime are first offered access to job programs and other city services to encourage them to change.

Those that refuse the help and also continue committing crimes are then targeted for arrest.

Seven of the warrants were served in Oakland. Three others were served outside the city.
