NOVATO (CBS SF) – A distraught Richmond man was arrested Sunday afternoon after he allegedly threw rocks and debris at vehicles on U.S. Highway 101 in Novato, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The CHP received several calls around 3:20 p.m. about a man, later identified as 22-year-old Terrelle Hollis, of Richmond, walking south along the highway’s center divider near Alameda Del Prado, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

Hollis later jumped over the center divider, walked north and ran across all four lanes of northbound Highway 101, narrowly avoiding being hit by passing cars, Barclay said.

CHP officers tried to contact Hollis, who was throwing rocks and other debris onto the freeway, Barclay said.

Hollis was nearly hit again when he intentionally ran in front of an SUV that was exiting the highway, CHP officials said. He then picked up a large rock and advanced toward CHP officers in a threatening manner, Barclay said.

Two pedestrians, later identified as Hollis’ girlfriend and his brother, tried to stop Hollis, who was yelling for CHP officers to shoot him, Barclay said.

One of the pedestrians knocked the rock from Hollis’ hands, and CHP officers placed Hollis in a control hold to restrain him, Barclay said.

He was combative with the CHP officers, and punched a passenger-side window on a CHP patrol car, according to Barclay.

A Marin County sheriff’s deputy and a Novato police officer responded and helped detain and restrain Hollis.

Hollis was taken to Marin General Hospital for a mental health check. He was combative and verbally abusive to the medical staff and continued to resist attempts to restrain him, Barclay said.

After being evaluated, Hollis was booked into Marin County Jail for misdemeanor obstructing and resisting an officer, according to Barclay.

Hollis’ girlfriend and brother said he was distraught and suicidal, according to the CHP. It’s unclear if Hollis had been in a car with them before authorities were called to the scene, Barclay said.
