SALINAS (CBS SF) — Police in Salinas arrested a man who they believe burglarized a pizza restaurant Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to a report of a burglary that had just occurred at the Straw Hat Pizza, at 156 E. Laurel Drive, at about 8:50 a.m., police said.

A witness told police that a man, later identified as 22-year-old Salvatore Barone, was running from the business with a cash register after kicking in the front doors, according to police.

Officers spotted Barone at the Salinas Sports Complex, at 1034 N. Main St., about half a mile away, and a chase ensued, police said.

Barone, who had an outstanding warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia, was caught and arrested, police said.

The suspect was found to possess a small amount of cash. The register was found nearby, police said.

He was booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of commercial burglary, resisting arrest, as well as an outstanding warrant.
