SF Policewoman Who Shot Mentally Ill Man Awarded Silver Medal Of Valor

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- A San Francisco policewoman who shot and killed a mentally ill attacker has been awarded a silver medal of valor.

Officer Mary Godfrey was among seven officers to receive the prestigious honor Wednesday night.

She shot and killed 32-year-old Pralith Pralourng in July of last year. Authorities say he charged at her with a box cutter after slashing a co-worker at a chocolate factory.

An investigation into the shooting hasn't been officially closed. However, Police Chief Greg Suhr says he considers it complete and says it indicates that the officer fired in self-defense.

The Police Commission approved her nomination.
