Knife-Wielding Suicidal Man Hospitalized After Police Standoff In Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- An apparently suicidal man was hospitalized after cutting himself and refusing to put away his knife when confronted by a police officer in Santa Rosa, according to police.

Around 12:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to a house in west Santa Rosa on a report of a suicidal person. A suicide prevention hotline reported that a man and called who said he was suicidal and had cut himself, according to police.

As an arriving officer approached the home on foot, he saw a man standing in the driveway with a bloody arm holding a folding knife with the blade open.

The officer drew his service weapon, told the man to drop the knife and called for additional officers.

Police said the man refused to drop the knife and told the officer, "You are going to have to kill me."

The officer repeatedly told the man he didn't want to hurt him and to get rid of the knife, police said.

Minutes later, the man put the knife in his pocket, followed the officer's request to get on the ground and was handcuffed, according to police.

Medical personnel took the man to a local hospital for treatment and mental health evaluation.

The man suffered a non-lethal cut to his arm, and no other injuries were reported.
