Man Taken For Mental Evaluation After Standoff Near Mill Valley
MARIN COUNTY (CBS SF) -- A resident of a Tamalpais Valley apartment complex was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation after threatening to kill authorities during a two-hour standoff Wednesday morning, a sheriff's lieutenant said.
The 59-year-old man, whose name has not been released, told sheriff's deputies he had guns, Marin County sheriff's Lt. Jamie Scardina said.
The sheriff's office, Mill Valley police, the California Highway Patrol and U.S. Park Police went to the Northern Apartments on Maple Street, between Marin Avenue and Shoreline Highway, after someone called 911 around 9:45 a.m., Scardina said.
The caller reported hearing a voice in a nearby apartment yelling "please help," and seeing someone in the apartment throw an object through a window and yell, "there has been a murder committed inside," Scardina said.
About six residents of the complex were evacuated, and neighbors were advised via the county's Telephone Emergency Notification System to shelter in place, the lieutenant said.
Deputies established communication with the distraught resident, who yelled that he was armed and wanted to kill police, Scardina said.
When communications broke down after about an hour, a new negotiating team was formed, and communication was re-established as deputies made their way into the complex's hallway, according to Scardina.
The resident eventually left the apartment with the deputies and was taken for a mental health evaluation. No guns were found, and there was no sign a crime had been committed, Scardina said.
