Daily Madden: Why Thursday Night Means Sloppy Football

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The struggling 49ers face the Rams in St. Louis Thursday night.

"I think it will be a sloppy game," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "Usually in these short weeks the teams don't play well because I don't think they're ready. I don't think there's anyway you can play on Sunday, and then in a couple of days get read to play a pro football game on Thursday night. So in each Thursday night game, I think both teams are ill-prepared to play, and I would expect the same thing tonight... Who picks up the fumble and runs it in? Who blocks the kick and runs it in? Who intercepts the ball and runs it in? Who catches the tipped pass for a touchdown? Those kinds of things, I think, are going to be the things that win."

Madden said it's hard to pick a favorite because neither team looked good in their last game.

"If one of them were playing well or had a little something going...you'd probably say that team is favored," Madden said. "I still like the 49ers here. But it's a tough week for them because they're injured a little. It's a real short week, and it's tough to play the short week (especially) when you're the traveling team." (7:00)
