Man In Wheelchair Killed By Hit & Run Driver In Salinas

SALINAS (CBS SF) - Police are looking for the driver of a white pickup truck who struck and fatally injured a man in a wheelchair while backing out of a parking spot at a Salinas shopping center last month.

The victim, Hannibal Batistiana, 30, was driving his electric wheelchair through the parking lot of the East Laurel Shopping Center at 650 E. Laurel Drive at about 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 29 when the pickup backed into him, Salinas police Sgt. Gerald Ross said.

The driver of the full-size pickup then drove way, according to Ross.

Batistiana suffered a fractured arm and leg and was taken to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, where he died of complications from his injuries on Oct. 4, Ross said.

Police have reviewed video footage of the collision obtained from businesses near the accident site but still have not located the driver, Ross said.

"We may end up releasing some of the video" to the public to help identify the vehicle, Ross said.

There were no eyewitnesses to the collision, he said.
