Pedestrian On Tracks Killed By Amtrak Train In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - An Amtrak train struck and killed a pedestrian in San Leandro Wednesday morning, a police and Amtrak officials said.

Train No. 527, which was on the Capitol Corridor line, was heading toward San Jose when it struck the pedestrian around 9:20 a.m. near Floresta Boulevard and Washington Avenue, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.

There is no designated crossing at that intersection, Graham said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, San Leandro police Lt. Randall Brandt said.

There were 54 passengers on the train at the time, and no one on board was injured, Graham said. The train was held at the scene, and was expected to continue on to San Jose.

"This train should be moving shortly," she said.

A relief crew was brought in, but passengers remained on board.

Northbound train No. 528 was turned around at the Hayward station because of the incident. Passengers were being bused from Hayward to Oakland, Graham said.

Washington Avenue was closed for several blocks near where the collision happened, Brandt said.
