Body Found Near Truck Of San Jose Miner Missing In Wilderness

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS SF) - Searchers in Nevada County looking for a missing gold miner from San Jose have found the body of man about 1,500 feet away from the miner's truck in a remote area near the South Yuba River, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office has not identified the body but family members of the missing man Walter Steever, 65, have been informed about the find near where Steever's truck was located on Tuesday, sheriff's administrative assistant Donna Nelson said.

The body was found off of a trail on the side of a steep slope leading down to the South Yuba River, where prospectors go to look for gold, Nelson said.

So far the sheriff's office does not suspect foul play in the man's death, Nelson said.

The body was seen early Wednesday afternoon by ground searchers, Nelson said.

About 103 people were out searching Wednesday on the ground and in the air looking for Steever, who was reported missing Tuesday, after his family said that he was last seen in San Jose last Wednesday, Nelson said.
