Man Shot By SFPD Was Awaiting Trial In Craigslist Scam

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A man who was shot by police in San Francisco's Marina District after he allegedly pulled out a gun on Sunday afternoon has been identified as 19-year-old Rommel Narvaez.

Narvaez, a San Francisco resident, was shot after officers responded to a report of a fight at Chestnut and Pierce streets around 12:30 p.m. A male was said to be hitting a victim on the head with a silver handgun, police said.

The suspect, later identified as Narvaez, allegedly fired several shots at the victim before fleeing east on Toledo Way. He then hid in a bush at Mallorca and Capra ways, according to police.

Officers found Narvaez at that intersection and ordered him to come out of the bushes, but he ran north on Mallorca Way and brandished his gun, police said.

That is when several officers fired at him and he was struck.

Narvaez was arrested and taken to San Francisco General Hospital,

where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He was listed in serious condition Wednesday morning.

The victim in the initial fight, who had fled in a blue car driven by a female, was found outside of San Francisco, and police were able to interview him, police said.

Although Narvaez remains hospitalized, he has been booked on suspicion of second-degree burglary, robbery and battery. His bail was set at $115,000.

In April, a person with the same name, age and city of residence was charged in San Mateo County Superior Court with two counts of robbery and two assaults with a gun for a Craigslist robbery scam.

In those two incidents, which occurred on April 7 and 8, Narvaez allegedly lured two victims to locations in Daly City by posting phony Craigslist ads offering cash in exchange for iPhones. Instead of buying the phones, he allegedly robbed the victims at gunpoint.

He also has a prior robbery conviction from when he was a juvenile, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Narvaez was released from custody on Oct. 2 on a $150,000 bond, Wagstaffe said.

His trial on the charges stemming from the alleged Craigslist scam was scheduled to begin Dec. 2 in San Mateo County, Wagstaffe said.

On Narvaez's LinkedIn page, he lists himself as a medical assistant with the Healthcare Services Group, Inc. On his Facebook page, he said he earns $10 an hour.

San Francisco police Chief Greg Suhr is holding a town hall meeting tonight to discuss the officer-involved shooting.

Concerned residents are invited to attend the meeting, which starts at 6:15 p.m. at Marina Middle School, located at 3500 Fillmore St.
